I suffered from migraines for so many years, I know that migraine relief can seem impossible to find. Pain is the only obsessive, and missing from your life because you are hurting is neither no fun.

I missed the wedding of good friends. I have lost much of the holiday is at the hotel room, in pain. And I had friends to go home with my car, I was thrown onto a take-out container. (I decided to ignore the initial symptoms of migraine and I go for lunch with a friend visiting from out of town. I do not think any of us enjoyed this visit very much!)

Here are 4 best ways I have found to deal with a migraine. While rarely able to stop a completely migraine, these tips will give you some relief from pain and can help you quickly back to life.

Act immediately.
When you notice an oncoming migraine, to halt and take action immediately. The faster you react, the more effective it is. Quick action can reduce the severity and duration of migraine.

Never try to “hard out” with migraine. Not only you can make the pain worse, but you may end up stuck somewhere, may lead back because of pain and nausea.

Shut down, cool off and go for dark and quiet place. 
Stop what you’re doing and find a quiet place to lie down and rest. Own bedroom, you are often better, but if you’re away from home, a hotel room or place friend can work. Turn the air conditioning down to cool down, darkening the room or cover your eyes and turn off anything making noise.

Migraines can feel like a “sensory overload” – sounds, lights, all the smells cause more pain. By engaging in a cool, dark and quiet environment to minimize the number of things that can irritate your senses.

Cool Your Head
I like to put a pack of ice on the back of my neck, the base of my skull. You can also cool down with cold wraps (or slightly frozen, wet towels) placed around the head and eyes. Sometimes even a cool, damp cloth over your eyes helps (and blocks light).

Migraines are different from ordinary headaches. In a normal headache, our blood constrict vessels (smaller take stringent). In migraine, the expansion (get bigger and more open.) Frost does constrict the body. Chocolate ordinary headache can be worse, but it can help a migraine response to the expansion vessel.

Stop the “Mental Chatter”.
Noise can make the pain of migraine worse. Migraines me to react “My mental chatter” (and I have a ton of it) just as if it were a real sound in the world; It makes my head hurt worse!

So, literally trying to stop thinking. (This may be easier for people who meditate regularly when not experiencing a migraine.) Quiet my mind I say “shush” and I imagine every thought as bubble. I let the balloon go, floating through my head, not after the paragraph.

Focusing on your breathing can help distract you from your thoughts. Deep breath in a stable measurement. Breathe slowly and count, while four, hold for count of four, exhale for a count of eight, hold for count of four, then repeat.

Sleep it off.
For me, these are all trying to get to sleep. I try to bring it even possible, quiet my mind, my body relax, breathe deeply … and desperately hope to be able to sleep. Sleep appears to act as a huge “Reset” to me, and I almost always feel much better after a long nap.

Fat Friday: How to Deal With Dieter’s Guilt After Thanksgiving

You’ve heard of Black Friday, the celebrated shopping day after Thanksgiving? Well, there’s another less celebrated event that secretly happens to dieters all over America – Fat Friday.

On Fat Friday, dieters sit around wringing their hands and worrying about all those extra calories they indulged in during the holiday. Maybe you’re one of them. You’ve eaten from the list of “naughty” foods that your diet plan forbids you to even touch, right?

Let’s see, you probably indulged in:

Turkey with gravy (dark and white meat)

Bread stuffing

Mashed potatoes

Candied yams

Cheesy noodles or potatoes

Salty nuts of all kinds

More than one piece of delicious pie

Cake (with or without ice cream)

Cookies galore

Chocolate candy

And lots more stuff . . .

So, are you now hanging your head in shame and declaring that you can’t lose weight during the holidays? Okay, so let’s say that you’re right. Maybe you’re just not able to resist all the goodies swirling around you during this time of year.

Does that mean you throw in the towel?

Of course not!

If you’re on a well-structured diet plan, all you have to do is get back on the plan as soon as you feel you’re no longer overwhelmed by temptation. Dieting isn’t a game, it’s a safe way to train yourself how to maintain your weight loss over the long term.

So, what I suggest you do instead of feeling guilty, or, panicking, is to look for effective ways to lose weight by either: a) getting back on a structured diet plan you’ve started, or, b) choosing a structured diet plan that’s going to fit into your life style.

Please believe me when I say that you’re not alone in feeling guilty about eating lots of comfort food on Thanksgiving. Lots of people are feeling guilty on Fat Friday (even skinny folks). But, I think that guilt really takes away from your pure enjoyment of being around family and friends, while sharing a great meal. I mean, eating well is a part of life. It’s just not realistic to think that you’ll never, ever have another slice of pumpkin pie or helping of savory stuffing.

You ate it. You enjoyed it – great!

In your heart, you know that you’ve already chosen to make a commitment to your long term health by learning how to eat healthier in general.
