Diet and depression

Most people eat when they are depressed. It is possible that they may not realize that food itself could be the cause chemical depression. When someone is depressed, energy level and the action falls. Enthusiasm for most things, including meals, is lost. Consequently, feeding habits may suffer. Thus, the growth or unwanted weight loss, inadequate absorption of vitamins and minerals and alcohol abuse are often associated with depression. In fact, it is a process that takes place in both directions: on the one hand, depression causes weight variations, on the other hand, obesity or anorexia can be responsible for causing depression.

Each person is faced with a slight depression from time to time. This is a non-pathological is high on the life itself. But, if its expression does not disappear after a few weeks, may be diagnosed as clinical depression. Its treatment involves manipulating hormone levels or brain that produce pleasure or satisfaction and stress reduction. In this case, if the patient’s diet consists of junk food such as ‘fast food’, it is possible to confront a battle already lost since the junk food can have a major influence on these hormones as we shall see.

Influence of diet

Food largely influences the behavior of the brain. A poor diet, excessive food type fast food is a cause of depression. What you eat controls the levels of brain chemicals, that of neurotransmitters, which regulate behavior and are in close contact with our state of mind.

Most known neurotransmitters associated with disposal are serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. When the brain produces serotonin, tension is reduced. When producing dopamine or noradrenaline but we are in a state of alert, with a tendency to think and act more quickly. Eating fruits and vegetables (carbohydrates) and protein-rich foods like turkey, tuna or chicken increase amino acid levels in the brain, which has as consequence the growth and production of serotonin with a calming effect. Foods rich in protein, on the other hand, encourages the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, which increase the alert status and power of concentration. Try to include a source of protein in your diet several times a day, especially when you need to rinse your mind and increased energy. An excellent contribution to be extracted from protein: beans, peas, low beef, cheese degreased fish, milk, poultry products, soybeans, yogurt.

Dopamine. It seems that feeding ourselves with ‘junk food’ reduces the natural ability of the body to feel pleasure by interfering with dopamine receptors. Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory have found that obese adults had fewer dopamine receptors than healthy individuals. Consequently, these individuals are able to feel pleasure when eating, but this is not true when you have some other sources of pleasure, which leads to various forms of depression and increasing obesity.

Noradrenaline is a hormone that helps in case of stress. The mechanism by which food-type “fast food” interfere with noradrenaline is not well known yet. Interference may be similar to the distortion of dopamine receptors. Whatever the mechanism, however, is complicated by increased intake of salt in food.

Serotonin. A study by the National Institute of Health in the UK revealed that oil derived from fast food meals cause severe damage to serotonin levels causing depression, anger, violence and suicidal behavior. These problems can be transmitted from mother to fetus or, indicating the beginning of a diet since the identification task. So, when children and teenagers eat fast food eats, the brain can be affected long term. Doing even a parallel between increasing crime rates and increasing the percentage of oil used in the unhealthy diets of 38 industrialized countries have found a perfect correlation. When eating foods high in carbohydrates (bread, whole grains, pasta) and vitamin D increase the level of serotonin in the brain which induces a calming effect with less anxiety.

Try to find a diet that was eradicated depression? Unfortunately, there has been a certain remove it. Not carried out any studies which indicate a feeding program to improve symptoms of clinical depression. However it is recommended to eat Mediterranean-type diet including meat, chicken, seasonal vegetables and less imported or canned, dairy, very little red meat, eggs, wine and beer. While these diets have a relatively high fat intake, consumers face a lower risk of coronary disease because the menus are healthy fats such as olive oil. Diet rich in fatty fish such as sardines omega 3 oils which reduces blood cholesterol levels, lower blood sugar, is an antioxidant, imunoactivator, prevent gallstones.

So, researchers believe it is a connection between obesity and depression that can result from physiological changes that take place in the immune system and hormones. To simplify matters for both health and budget tables are recommended to be limited to a “golden rule”: a protein, a vegetable and a healthy fat component. They cover the basic elements of a table while providing basic and necessary steps to make things interesting.

Omega 3 For Depression – Learn How To Select The Best Omega 3 Fish Oils For Treating Depression

When it comes to using omega 3 for depression, much research has been carried out and even more is on-going in this area that’s been the cause of much excitement in the scientific community. Taking a daily fish oil really helps to lift depression, but it’s essential to know what specifically to look for otherwise you may get no benefits at all.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for the healthy formation of the brain’s nerve cell membranes, and when a person is lacking in them, as over 90% of us are, changes in the membrane can affect mood, behavior and mental function.

Over 30% of an adult brain is made up of DHA omega 3 fats so it comes as no surprise just how influential these fatty acids are, especially as the human body cannot manufacture them.

Omega 3 for depression can help with other aspects of mental health like schizophrenia, alleviating the symptoms by as much as twenty-five percent according to the latest studies.

In addition they help to prevent heart disease and strokes, lower high blood pressure, boost the immune system and treat arthritis to name a few.

To get the maximum rewards, any fish oil supplement you choose must have high levels of the most important fatty acid – DHA. You will discover if you haven’t already, that most contain more EPA as it’s cheaper to make but robs you of many of the health benefits.

Look to get at least a minimum of 250mg of DHA per individual capsule or soft gel.

You also want to make sure you don’t ingest any toxins or poisons from the fish so molecularly distilled oil will have all of them removed for concentrated, purer and safer oil.

The sheer range of benefits that this natural substance provides makes it one of the most powerful in nature with little or no side effects from a quality oil, and you can really help to improve your sense of well-being and reduce mood swings using omega 3 for depression.

Omega 3 And Brain Development – Does It Really Help?

Omega 3 and Brain
Use it or lose it. This is what experts say about our brain. The more we use it and keep it active, the better it will perform and will remain healthy. But did you know there is something else too that is very effective at ensuring your brain’s health and well being?

Omega 3 and brain health are very closely linked. Numerous studies have proven that increasing the intake of omega 3 fats helps in improving memory and focus, benefits cognitive function and the nerve transmission process.

Omega 3 also helps in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. In children, lower levels of these fats have been linked with a lower IQ, aggression, ADHD and dyslexia.

Increasing omega 3 intake helps increase the serotonin levels in the brain and keeps depression at bay.

In short, taking more of these fats is the best thing you can do to keep your brain running in top form.

Now let’s find out what is the best source of this nutrient.

Flax seed oil is one source of omega 3 fats. It contains ALA fat inside. ALA is internally converted by our body into DHA and EPA fats and then it is able to derive the health benefits from it. This is not an efficient process and only about 5% to 25% fat is able to get converted.

It makes sense then to directly focus our efforts to take DHA and EPA fats through our diet.

Fish like Salmon, Mackerel and Hoki are amongst the best sources of these two fats. In case you’re wondering, the Hoki is a fish found in the pristine waters of the southern coast of New Zealand.

It contains high quantities of DHA and EPA and is free from any contaminants too due to the clean ocean waters there.

One option of taking these fats is to directly eat these fish as a part of your regular diet. This is easier said than done as not only would it quickly become monotonous, but expensive too.

A much easier option to get omega 3 and brain benefits is to take a fish oil supplement derived from these DHA rich fish. In less than the cost of one meal of fish, you can get a month’s supply of the supplement.

Your next step? To take what you’ve learned and get omega 3 and brain benefits from the right fish oil. Visit my website for more information.

What is DHA used for in Supplements?

What is DHA used for these days?  While the abbreviation could refer to a form of vitamin C, the active ingredient in self-tanning products or a coal tar derivative, it is most commonly used to refer to Docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid.  Here’s where you’ll find it and what it’s good for.

The primary dietary source of Docosahexaenoic acid in the human diet is fish and seafood.  At one time, beef, poultry and eggs may have been a source of the nutrient, but as they have been taken off of grass and other greens, fed primarily corn and grain, the foods are no longer sources of the nutrient.  Any omega-3 that they contain is alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.

ALA is an essential fatty acid, but it is not used by the human body “as is”.  It is converted to Eicosapentaenoic acid, which through a series of steps may eventually be converted to Docosahexaenoic acid, but researchers believe that the conversion occurs only under severe circumstances.  They know that only a small amount is converted and that high intakes of ALA do not increase circulating blood levels of Docosahexaenoic acid, which makes it an essential fatty acid, too.

What is DHA used for in the human body?  It is a primary component of brain cells, neurons and the epithelium inside of the eye.  It is believed that regular fish and seafood consumption was what allowed man’s brain to become larger, in the first place.

Low levels of Docosahexaenoic acid are associated with Alzheimer’s and depressive disorders.  Those findings indicate that the nutrient is necessary for the continued health of the brain, not just during early childhood or during fetal development.

What is DHA used for by food manufacturers?  Primarily, it is a food additive.  Until recently, the main use was to fortify infant formulas.  Breast milk is rich in Docosahexaenoic acid.  Cow’s milk and soy, the basis of infant formulas, do not provide the nutrient.

What is DHA used for in the treatment and prevention of diseases?  That is a relatively new field of study, although it began over two decades, ago.  Arthritis, heart disease, and depression are just a few of the conditions that may benefit from  supplementation.

Most cardiologists agree that the primary benefit is in the area of heart disease prevention.  Exactly how much is necessary to provide the benefit is still unclear.  But, most doctors recommend a minimum daily intake of Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid combined.

What is DHA used for?  It’s used by the human body to grow and live.  It is a nutrient essential for good health and long life.

The Healing Benefits of Fish Oil In Our Body

Did you know that there are healing benefits of fish oil? Believe it or not, there are actually quite a few, and one of the main ones is helping with cardiovascular disease, as a treatment alternative. Cardiovascular disease is a prominent killer in the U.S., typically brought on by chronic inflammation and poor lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, too much stress, and lack of sleep.

While the causes of cardiovascular disease are still not entirely known, evidence does suggest that a healthy lifestyle lowers the risk of having it. In addition, experts believe that emotional or physical trauma is an important factor for getting it, and that cardiovascular disease victims suffer from frequent abnormal transmission responses to pain.

Insomnia and sleep disorders take their toll in cardiovascular disease patients, and a lack of sleep is one major cause of inflammation and stress on the body. Not only are the healing benefits of fish oil applicable to cardiovascular disease in general, but they also apply to many symptoms that exacerbate the disease. The potential to alleviate both symptoms and the disease itself is a powerful part of fish growing appeal.

For example, fish oil is known to lower triglycerides, improve cholesterol, thin the blood, and even unclog blocked arteries! It truly is like a miracle cure. Of course it won’t be nearly as effective if you don’t enjoy a healthy lifestyle, but the healing benefits of it extend not only to treatment, but also to prevention, of cardiovascular disease.

Take chronic inflammation as a good example. When you have chronic inflammation, you could eventually suffer from a number of dangerous conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc. You can also suffer from conditions that lower your quality of life, such as acne and arthritis. The problem with inflammation is that the body is often attacking itself, a condition referred to as an autoimmune disease (attacking oneself).

Fish oil specifically works to counteract not only the inflammation you’re experiencing, but also many of the other causes of these conditions. If you are suffering from heart troubles, you not only can lower your risk by reducing inflammation, but you can also help by alleviating many of the causes, like clogged arteries and high cholesterol. It helps with depression too, by giving the brain more of what it’s made of: DHA (one of the Essential Fatty Acids found in this oil).

Overall, the healing benefits of fish oil are as astounding as they are numerous. For a huge number of conditions, this allows you to either fully recover from them or provide some relief from symptoms. Best of all, over your lifetime, you’re less likely to develop the conditions that claim so many lives. Just make sure that when you go out and get your fish oil, you buy the kind called “pharmaceutical-grade”, which leaves out all of the nasty toxins and contaminants that are commonly found dumped in rivers and oceans. Hopefully you can start enjoying the many healing benefits of fish oil soon!

Benefits of Fish Oil for Fitness and Health

When the words oils and fats are mentioned, health-conscious individuals tend to run for cover. What they fail to realize is that there are good fats and bad fats. Completely avoiding the intake of oils and fats would actually be detrimental – rather than beneficial – to their health.

 The Truth about Fish Oil

Essential fatty acids must always be part of our daily diet – without them, we take one step closer to our deaths. Essential fatty acids are divided into two families: omega-6 EFAs and omega-3 EFAs.

Although there are only very slight differences to distinguish the two groups of essential fatty acids from each other, studies have revealed that too much intake of omega-6 EFAs can lead to inflammation, blood clotting and tumor growth. The good news, however, is that the opposite is true for omega-3 EFAs. Omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils while omega-3 EFAs can be found in fish oils among other foods.

Omega-6 vs. Omega-3

Physicians and scientists agree that the cause behind increasing cases of heart disease, hypertension or high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, premature aging and certain kinds of cancer is none other than an imbalanced intake of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.

As mentioned earlier, omega-6 EFAs can be found in vegetable oils. This includes, but is not limited to, corn oil and soy oil, both of which contain high amounts of linoleic acid. Omega-3 EFAs can be found in marine plankton and walnut and flaxseed oils. It should be significant to note that fatty fish and fish oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that are known to provide many benefits to the human body. In the early 1970’s, a study of Greenland Eskimos revealed that one of the major reasons why they rarely suffer from heart disease is because of their high-fat diet (mainly composed of fish).

The two essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are also helpful in preventing atherosclerosis, heart attacks, depression and various forms of cancer. Fish oil supplements have also proven useful in treating illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

 Making the Heart Healthier

The heart is inarguably one of the most important parts of our body and it is essential that we keep our hearts healthy in order to live a long and enjoyable life. And one way of doing that is eating food that contains fish oil or taking fish oil supplements.

In Athens, Greece a study was done to determine if there was a direct relationship between a high fish diet and inflammation of blood vessels. The results revealed that those who ate more fish had a lower level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, factors that are commonly used to measure the likelihood of blood vessel inflammation.

Another benefit of fish oil supplements is the lowering of total cholesterol levels. This has been directly documented by the author of this report in his own experience. More and more doctors are beginning to recommend the use of Omega-3 supplements as a stand-alone procedure or in partnership with prescription medications to effectively reduce the total cholesterol level.

 Fish to Become Thin

In Perth, Australia, a study revealed that fish consumption can fight hypertension and obesity. Researchers of the UWA (University of Western Australia) have discovered that a weight-loss diet which includes a regular amount of fish consumption can be quite effective in reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance.

 Fish Oil to Combat Asthma

Millions of people worldwide suffer from respiratory problems like asthma. These folks should be pleased to learn that research has revealed the benefits of fish oil for asthma sufferers. Statistics show that approximately 20 to 25% of children today suffer one form of asthma or another. And evidence reveals a regular diet of food with high linoleic acid content as the reason behind it.

Researchers at the University of Wyoming conducted an experiment in which a number of children were given a high-fish diet while others continued with their regular diet. Results revealed that the participants who ate more fish were less prone to asthma attacks and were able to breathe more easily.

 Consult Your Nutritionist Now

Nothing is good when consumed or used excessively but complete avoidance of a particular food type is equally harmful as well. Ask your nutritionist or doctor for the right amount of fish intake for you.

 Disclaimer

While the benefits of fish oil supplements are many and are well documented, this report should in no way be construed as a diagnosis of, or means to cure, any illness or physical condition. It is extremely important, as noted above, that you consult a nutritionist or health care professional before starting any new food supplement. Let it be noted here that the author of this article makes no claims to the benefits of fish oil other than his own personal experience.
